Ghana has made significant strides in African Union (AU) leadership as three of its distinguished nationals have been elected to key positions within the AU Commission during the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council.
The meeting, held in Addis Ababa from February 12 to 13, 2025, brought together foreign ministers and officials from across the continent to discuss critical policy matters and elect new leaders for various AU bodies.
Ambassador Amma Adomaa Twum-Amoah, a seasoned diplomat and Ghana’s former envoy to Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia, and South Sudan, has been elected Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development for the 2025-2028 term. Her extensive experience in diplomacy and African affairs positions her well to drive key social and health initiatives across the continent.
Additionally, Hon. Edem Kwami Senanu, a veteran Management and Development Consultant, secured a re-election as a Member of the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption for the 2025-2029 term. With three decades of expertise in governance and anti-corruption efforts, his continued presence on the board is expected to strengthen Africa’s fight against corruption and enhance transparency across member states.
Ambassador Jane Gasu Aheto, a career diplomat with over 30 years of service in Ghana’s Foreign Ministry and former Ambassador to Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, has been appointed Member of the African Union Commission on International Law for the 2025-2029 term. Her vast knowledge of international law and diplomacy is set to contribute significantly to the legal framework of the African Union.
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, along with the leadership and staff of the ministry, extended heartfelt congratulations to the appointees, applauding their achievements as a testament to Ghana’s growing influence in continental affairs.
