Tensions flared in the Ablekuma North constituency election as unidentified individuals stormed the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) early Friday morning, vandalizing properties and disrupting the recount process.
The election, contested between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Afriyie and the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Ewurabena Aubynn, has been marred by allegations and heightened tensions.
The EC had planned to continue the recollation of votes to resolve outstanding disputes when the attack occurred.
Eyewitnesses report that the perpetrators forcibly entered the premises, causing significant damage to office equipment. Security forces were later called to the scene to restore order, but no immediate arrests have been reported.
As investigations continue, the EC has not yet announced a timeline for resuming the recollation exercise. The attack has heightened concerns about the conduct of elections in the constituency, drawing calls from civil society groups for increased security measures at EC offices.
The outcome of the Ablekuma North election remains unresolved, with tensions threatening to escalate further if swift action is not taken to address the situation.
