Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced a 35-year-old tiler, Musah Hamidu, to one day in prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing two mobile phones.
The court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, convicted Hamidu under Section 124(1) of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) for dishonestly appropriating the devices belonging to Stephen Foli, a mobile phone repairer.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Esther Mensah, the incident took place on December 30, 2024, at New Fadama, Darkuman. Hamidu had visited a drinking spot operated by Foli’s wife, where he stole a Techno Spark phone valued at GH¢1,500 and an Oppo phone worth GH¢2,200 before fleeing.
Days later, on January 4, 2025, Foli recognized Hamidu at the Darkuman Police Station, where he was in custody for an unrelated case. Upon interrogation, Hamidu admitted to the theft and assisted police in retrieving the Techno Spark phone from Circle. However, the Oppo device was never recovered.
Considering his guilty plea and cooperation with authorities, the court handed down a one-day custodial sentence.
Land Guard Case Adjourned to February 27, 2025
In a separate case, the Dansoman Circuit Court is handling the prosecution of Kofi Abban, alias Yaro, who is accused alongside four accomplices still at large of involvement in land guard activities and violent attacks.
The charges against them include conspiracy to commit crime, prohibition of land guard activities, and causing harm under the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999) and the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Prosecutors allege that on October 18, 2024, Abban and his accomplices armed themselves with cutlasses, sticks, and a pistol and attacked masons working on a piece of land at Amanhia, Greater Accra, which belongs to Anthony Gaanaa.
During the attack, Abban allegedly inflicted a deep cut on the right elbow of one of the masons, Kingsley Ofori. He was later arrested on October 25, 2024, at his hideout in Amanhia, while his accomplices remain at large.
Abban first appeared in court on August 28, 2024, where he pleaded not guilty and was remanded into custody. However, he was later granted bail on November 13, 2024, with stringent conditions, including a GH¢50,000 bond and three sureties.
The court has ordered the defense to serve a notice of alibi on the prosecution. The case has been adjourned to February 27, 2025, for further proceedings.
