To strengthen cooperation between regulators and the media, the leadership of the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC), under the Ministry of Health, visited the National Secretariat of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG).
The TMPC delegation, led by Registrar Dr. Michael Kyeremateng and Head of Corporate Affairs Numo Blafo III, was warmly received by PRINPAG’s National President, Andrew Edwin Arthur, and his team. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration to effectively regulate the herbal medicine industry and build public confidence.
“As the regulatory body for traditional medicine, we recognize the media’s vital role in disseminating information and shaping public perception,” said Dr. Kyeremateng. “This visit underscores our commitment to a collaborative relationship with PRINPAG to promote the safe and ethical practice of traditional medicine in Ghana.”
Key discussion points included raising public awareness of TMPC’s mandate, legal frameworks, and enforcement measures. Both parties also explored training workshops to equip journalists with the skills needed for accurate reporting on traditional medicine regulations and developments.
“We are excited about the possibilities this partnership offers,” remarked PRINPAG President Andrew Edwin Arthur. “Our members are eager to collaborate with TMPC to ensure traditional medicine practitioners uphold the highest standards, fostering public confidence in herbal products and services.”
An outcome of the meeting was the agreement to establish a dedicated team of journalists specializing in traditional medicine reporting, further strengthening the synergy between the regulatory body and the media.
The discussion also addressed concerns about the exploitation of practitioners by unregulated associations and the rise of unauthorized traditional medicine practices, particularly online.
Through this partnership, TMPC and PRINPAG aim to create a more transparent, regulated, and trusted traditional medicine industry in Ghana, benefiting both practitioners and consumers.
Also present at the meeting were PRINPAG’s Executive Secretary, Jeorge Wilson Kingson, and Treasurer, Madam Fordia Amenyah.
