The Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism has conducted a working visit to Sunda Ghana Limited as part of its oversight responsibilities of Trade, Industry, and Tourism activities in Ghana.

The visit was to gain insight and information about the company’s operational challenges and how best the Government can support them.

The Managing Director of Sunda Ghana Limited, Mr. Wei Yea, guided the Committee through a concise presentation on the company, detailing its operations, investment history, and growth in Ghana.

According to Mr. Wei Yea, the company faced a challenge where it was forced to uninstall two of its operational lines due to the smuggling of low-quality products particularly diapers resulting in the layoff of approximately 350 employees.

He appealed to the members of the Committee to protect and support local manufacturing companies by developing policies to help combat these illegal activities, emphasizing the company’s commitment to producing better products.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordzie commended the management of Sunda Ghana Limited for their insightful presentation and acknowledged the significant role the company has played in Ghana’s economy, particularly in the area of job creation. “I’m happy to note a lot of things are going on in Ghana, unfortunately, we are not aware of it”. “I think that is the reason Majority Leader and the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mahama Ayariga has asked all Committees to use this short recess to leave the walls of Parliament to the field to get information that will guide the decision of the president to reset Ghana”.

He emphasized that protecting and supporting the expansion of the company’s operations would enhance its production capacity, ultimately leading to the creation of more jobs.

This, he noted, aligns with the President’s 24-hour economy policy, which aims to boost industrial productivity and economic growth through continuous operations.
