An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to 39-year-old trader, Mohammed Abdullai, who was charged with stealing air-conditioning materials from the New Bank of Ghana Building project at Ridge.
Presiding over the case, Her Honour Susana Eduful (Mrs) granted Abdullai bail in the sum of GHC 60,000 with two sureties.
The court stipulated that the sureties must earn not less than GHC 3,000 per month, with one being a direct family member of the accused.
Abdullai pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).
The Incident
According to Detective Inspector Frederick Mensah of the Adabraka District CID, the case was reported on October 21, 2024, by Leslie Kwesi Clarke, the Safety Officer at the construction site.
Clarke, assisted by two others, apprehended Abdullai and handed him over to the police along with a bag containing stolen items.
Investigations revealed that Abdullai, a former laborer at the site who was dismissed in 2023, entered the ninth floor of the building and stole eight pieces of Amaflex rubber tubing and copper pipes valued at GHC 500 and GHC 3,600, respectively.
These items belonged to Fox Cooling Company, which is handling air-conditioning installations at the site.
Further investigations confirmed that Abdullai did not visit the site to look for a friend, as he initially claimed, but rather with the intent to steal.
Witness Account
The witness Leslie Akwesi Clarke confirmed that at around 7:00 a.m. on October 21, he received a call from military personnel guarding the site.
The officers had arrested Abdullai with three coils of 45-meter copper pipes and rubber coatings removed from outdoor air-conditioning units on the eighth floor.
