A 31-year-old trader, Dorcas Twene Amankwa, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Accra Circuit Court for defrauding 97 victims in a GH¢402,000 recruitment scam.

The court, presided over by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah, found her guilty of defrauding by false pretenses.

The court heard that in 2021, Amankwa falsely claimed to work at the Jubilee House and had access to protocol slots for recruitment into various security agencies.

She convinced Michael Amoah, an Immigration Officer and the complainant in the case, to collect payments from individuals seeking enlistment.

Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Richard Amoah revealed that victims paid fees ranging from GH¢7,000 to GH¢15,000 for the supposed protocol enlistments.

Amankwa received a total of GH¢402,000 from 97 people but failed to secure their recruitment into agencies such as the Ghana Immigration Service and Ghana National Fire Service.

When the promised enlistments did not materialize, Amoah reported the matter to the police. Amankwa admitted during investigations to collecting GH¢400,000 and named an accomplice, identified only as “Boadi,” but failed to assist police in locating him.

The court emphasized the need for the sentence to serve as a deterrent to others engaging in fraudulent activities.
