The Accra High Court has fixed July 23, 2025, as the date for the commencement of trial against Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), and Solomon Asamoah, the Fund’s former Chief Executive Officer, in connection with the failed $2 million Accra Sky Train project.
The two former officials are facing charges of causing financial loss to the state and willful dissipation of public funds, after millions of dollars allocated to the ambitious urban transport initiative could not be accounted for. Both have pleaded not guilty and have been granted bail.
When the matter was called in court on Wednesday, July 9, proceedings took a turn after lawyers for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi withdrew an earlier application that sought to have the charges against him dismissed.
The motion, which had prompted the Attorney General to request a fast-tracked hearing on July 3, could not proceed on that date due to the absence of the defence lawyers.
With the lead counsel officially withdrawing the motion on Wednesday, Justice Comfort Tasiame subsequently struck it out.
In the same sitting, Victoria Barth, appearing for Solomon Asamoah, requested additional time to review the case documents, noting that she had recently assumed responsibility for her client’s legal representation.
Justice Tasiame then granted the request and adjourned proceedings to July 23, when the prosecution is expected to call its first witness, the first of eight lined up for the trial.
