A dispute over loading rights at the Metro Mass Station near the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has led to the death of driver Seidu Agbasu following an altercation with fellow driver Gabriel Siaw, known as Bosco.
The incident occurred on August 8, 2024, when Agbasu, operating a green Sprinter Benz commercial vehicle (registration number GW 7593-14), arrived at the station to gather passengers headed for Dodowa.
Siaw, who was also calling for passengers to board his vehicle to Madina Zongo Junction, confronted Agbasu after several of his passengers switched to Agbasu’s vehicle.
Tensions escalated when Siaw allegedly shut the door of Agbasu’s vehicle, triggering a confrontation.
The argument quickly turned physical, resulting in Siaw pushing Agbasu to the ground, where he struck his head on a pavement block.
Agbasu sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Ridge Hospital, where he was treated in critical condition.
On August 14, Siaw appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Judge Isaac Addo, facing a charge of causing harm under Section 69 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29).
He did not enter a plea and was remanded into police custody.
Siaw was granted bail on August 28, set at GH¢50,000 with two sureties, and the case was adjourned to October 10.
At the adjourned hearing, the court learned that Seidu Agbasu had died from his injuries. Consequently, the charge was upgraded to murder.
Due to the Circuit Court’s lack of jurisdiction over murder cases, Siaw was discharged, and the case was struck out, pending further proceedings.
The prosecution, led by DSP Evans Kesse, is expected to initiate committal proceedings at the District Court.
Prior to Agbasu’s death, Siaw had pleaded not guilty to the original charge of causing harm.
