Trump threatens Strait of Hormuz blockade after failed US-Iran talks

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to “blockade any and all ships” attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route, after direct talks with Iran failed to produce an agreement.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said negotiations held in Islamabad, Pakistan, broke down because Iran was “unwilling to give up its nuclear ambitions.” The talks had been aimed at easing tensions over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Iran’s delegation leader, however, blamed the United States for the impasse, stating that Washington failed to build trust during the prolonged negotiations.

The collapse of the talks leaves the U.S. administration facing a difficult decision between escalating pressure on Iran or returning to the negotiating table, according to international affairs analysts.

The Strait of Hormuz, which links the Persian Gulf to global markets, is one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, with a significant portion of global oil shipments passing through it daily. Any disruption could have far-reaching economic consequences.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue elsewhere in the region. Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold separate talks in Washington next week amid ongoing tensions.

Despite the planned discussions, conditions on the ground remain volatile. Reports from southern Lebanon indicate that Israeli military operations are continuing, with little sign of de-escalation.

Observers say the coming days will be critical in determining whether the situation moves toward further confrontation or renewed diplomacy.
