The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has expressed concerns over the treatment of professional teachers in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
According to NAGRAT, the establishment of TVET by the Ghana Education Service (GES) has created challenges for teachers who were previously employed in technical schools.
In a statement signed by President Angel Carbonu, NAGRAT criticized the Ministry of Education for failing to provide a transitional period for teachers to choose whether to remain with GES or transfer to TVET.
The association also expressed disappointment that the TVET management developed a Scheme of Service for teachers without consulting union representatives.
NAGRAT described the transfer of teachers from GES to TVET without their consent as unacceptable and criticized the removal of teachers’ names from their respective unions.
The association demanded that the Ministry of Education address these challenges by September 30, 2024, and provide a transition timetable for teachers to opt for their preferred service.
Additionally, NAGRAT called for union representatives to begin negotiations on service conditions for their members working with TVET, in accordance with labour law. If these demands are not met, the union threatened to embark on industrial action in solidarity with its members working with TVET.
