Two men have been arrested for illegally digging a grave at the Osu Cemetery, following a crackdown on unlawful and unethical burial practices at the site.
The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, which recently suspended all burials at the cemetery, confirmed that Eric Annan and Joseph Donkor were apprehended on Sunday, February 8, by a security task force assigned to oversee the cemetery, working alongside the cemetery sexton.
The suspects have been handed over to the Osu Police Station for further investigation and prosecution.
The arrests come after Municipal Chief Executive Alfred Allotey Gaisie held a press conference on Thursday, February 5, addressing verified complaints of unlawful exhumations, desecration of human remains, and the unauthorised sale of burial spaces.
All burials at Osu Cemetery have been suspended for two months to allow authorities to audit burial permits, verify documentation and plots, and restructure the cemetery’s management system.
Authorities have urged the public to cooperate as investigations continue and stressed that illegal activities at the cemetery will not be tolerated.
