Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has detained two Ghanaian nationals for allegedly being involved in electronic fraud, according to a video shared by Mozambiquen News Portal, Club of Mozambique.

The suspects, aged 34 and 40, were arrested in Chimoio city, central province of Manica. According to the news agency, the suspects were caught in the act with five Point of Sale (POS) terminals, 49 bank cards, and four mobile phones, which were allegedly used to conduct illegal money transfers.

According to Paulo Candieiro, SERNIC spokesperson in Manica, speaking to reporters, the seized bank cards belong to foreign financial institutions, raising suspicions that the suspects were transferring funds back to their home country.

“The POS terminals and cards are not local. We believe they were using this equipment for banking fraud. Further investigations are underway to trace the origin of the cards and devices, as well as to identify other potential members of the group”, he said.

“Work is ongoing to understand how these transactions were executed and if others are involved. Anyone linked to this scheme will be brought to justice”, he added.
