Two people have died and four others sustained injuries following a head-on collision between a tipper truck and a Nigerian passenger bus at Abease on the Elubo-Takoradi Highway.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the crash occurred on Friday, June 26, involving a Sinotruck (Howo) tipper truck with registration number GS 3789-24 and a Nigerian passenger bus with registration number AAA 449 YN (Lagos).

According to the GNFS, a distress call was received at 11:53 a.m., prompting the immediate dispatch of a rescue team from the Elubo Fire Station.

A five-member crew, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Clement Arthur and accompanied by Assistant Divisional Officer I Issifu Dauda Kaku, arrived at the scene six minutes later to begin rescue operations.

Firefighters found five occupants of the passenger bus and the tipper truck driver’s mate trapped in the wreckage. Three of the victims had already been rescued by bystanders before the emergency team arrived.

The rescue team successfully extricated the remaining victims and provided emergency assistance before transporting four injured persons to the Elubo Government Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Nigerian passenger bus was pronounced dead at the scene, while the mate of the tipper truck later died at the hospital. Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending further investigations.

Preliminary investigations by the Fire Service indicate that the crash occurred after the bus driver allegedly swerved to avoid a pothole, causing the vehicle to veer into the path of the oncoming tipper truck and resulting in the fatal collision.

The GNFS has urged motorists to exercise caution, observe safe speeds, and remain vigilant, particularly on roads with damaged surfaces, to help prevent similar accidents.
