A major fire swept through the La Nkwantanang area of Madina in the Greater Accra Region on the evening of Tuesday, July 15, leaving widespread destruction in its wake and sparking panic among residents and traders.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire began around 7 p.m. and rapidly engulfed several metal containers and wooden structures used as shops and storage spaces. Though the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, residents say they first noticed thick smoke billowing into the sky before flames spread uncontrollably through the congested area.
“The fire started suddenly and spread so fast. People were shouting, trying to carry things out of the shops, but the flames were too strong,” one witness told reporters at the scene.
Traders and residents attempted to salvage goods and personal belongings, while others fled to safety as the blaze intensified. The dense layout of the structures and the combustible nature of the materials contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly after receiving distress calls. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours and eventually brought it under control, preventing further damage to nearby buildings and residential units.
Although no fatalities have been recorded, several properties, including shops and stock valued at thousands of Ghana cedis, were destroyed.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, local authorities have begun assessments of the damage, with calls for improved fire safety measures and emergency response preparedness in densely populated areas like La Nkwantanang.
