The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, has remanded two men into custody over allegations of conspiracy, stealing, and forgery involving a rented vehicle.
The accused persons, Nana Abeka Anderson, a laboratory technician from North Kaneshie, and Nana Kofi Baah I, Gyaasehene of Gomoa Fete in the Central Region, have both pleaded not guilty to three counts — conspiracy to commit crime (stealing), stealing, and forgery of official documents.
They are expected to reappear in court on August 21, 2025.
Prosecuting officer Inspector Abigail Offeibea told the court that the complainant, Hazel Yamoah Kyei, a car rental manager residing at New Bortianor, was contacted on March 10, 2025, by the first accused, Anderson, who sought to rent a Kia Forte with registration number GW 110-25 for two days.
The following day, the complainant delivered the vehicle to Anderson at Haatso after receiving payment and a photocopy of identification cards — a Ghana Card and driver’s licence — both bearing the name Essel Kofi Elvis but displaying Anderson’s photograph.
Upon the expiry of the rental period on March 13, attempts by the complainant to retrieve the vehicle were unsuccessful, as Anderson’s phone was switched off and the car’s tracking device had been disabled.
A police report was filed on March 14, leading investigators to discover that Anderson had already been arrested in another case at the CID Headquarters.
During interrogation, he admitted to renting the vehicle and failing to return it, claiming he had handed it over to Baah at Kakraba.
The prosecution said Baah also admitted receiving the vehicle from Anderson and, together, they passed it on to a third accomplice — identified as Yakubu, who is currently at large. The two allegedly received GH¢16,000 from the sale and shared the proceeds.
Checks with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) revealed the IDs used in the transaction were fake.
Both accused persons are also in custody at the Police Headquarters Intelligence Directorate in connection with another case, in which four other vehicles have been recovered. Police say they have so far refused to assist in locating the missing Kia Forte.
The case is still under investigation.
