The University for Development Studies (UDS) made history on Sunday in Dalian, China, in beaten defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2-1 to lift the FISU World University Football Championship, becoming the first African team ever to lift the title.
The victory did not come easy. The Ghanaian side conceded an early goal in the first half, forcing them to fight from behind against a confident Brazilian team. UDS, however, showed resilience and tactical discipline, keeping their composure and pressing for an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off late in the second half when they found the net, forcing the game into extra time. Both sides played cautiously through the first period, refusing to concede ground.
In the last minutes of the second half of extra time, UDS struck decisively. A well-taken corner kick was converted to seal the win, sparking wild celebrations among players, coaches and supporters.
The triumph was also a personal statement of tactical brilliance from the UDS coaching staff, whose game plan neutralised Paulista’s fluid attack. Just weeks earlier, the two teams had played out a tense 1-1 draw in the group stages, but this time the Ghanaians proved superior.
Beyond the scoreline, the win is historic. Never before had an African university lifted the world title in university football. UDS’s feat has now etched Ghana into the global football story at the student level.
