Ghana marked a major milestone in its mining sector with the official opening of Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd, the country’s third-largest mine, following its first gold pour on Friday, November 8, 2024.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the mine in the Talensi district, Upper East Region, underscoring the government’s commitment to establishing Ghana as a premier hub for mining in Africa.
Cardinal Namdini, West Africa’s largest single-stream mine, is expected to boost Ghana’s gold production with an annual output of 300,000 ounces in its first three years.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the mine’s importance in supporting local development, creating jobs, and strengthening Ghana’s role as Africa’s leading gold producer.
President Akufo-Addo expressed his vision for the mining sector to drive economic growth, emphasizing recent investments in geological exploration and infrastructure to bolster northern Ghana’s potential.
He also praised Cardinal Namdini for its commitment to local community projects, including the construction of an airport in Bolgatanga.
Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel A. Jinapor, detailed new government measures to facilitate mining operations in the region, including regional office upgrades and regulatory support.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, also expressed support, noting China’s continued investment in Ghana’s mining industry.
With this launch, Ghana’s mining sector is set for significant growth, underscoring the nation’s path toward becoming a global mining powerhouse.
