Jonas Awini, a resident of Sakumono Railways, has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court after being accused of unlawful entry and theft.
The court, presided over by Judge Susana Eduful, set the bail amount at GH₶50,000 with two sureties, both of whom must be public servants earning a minimum of GH₶3,000 monthly.
The 36-year-old suspect faces two charges: unlawful entry to commit a crime, specifically stealing, contrary to Sections 152 and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the same Act. Awini has pleaded not guilty to both charges. The case has been adjourned to February 5, 2025, for further proceedings.
Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey, standing in for Inspector Mina Kwafo, provided details of the case to the court. According to the prosecution, the complainant, Augustus Osae Akonnor, an architect residing at Sakumono Ghacem Estate, reported the incident after Awini was allegedly caught in the act.
On January 3, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Moro Baba, a witness dining at a restaurant opposite the complainant’s house, observed suspicious activity. Moro noticed an individual throwing metal objects over the fence of the complainant’s property. Sensing foul play, he concealed himself behind a container near the property to monitor the situation.
Moments later, Moro witnessed Awini scaling the fence from inside the property. Acting swiftly, Moro apprehended the suspect and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents. Together, they detained Awini until the complainant arrived and the police were notified.
Recovered items, valued at GH₶26,500, included a set of spanners, a drilling machine, and ABS motor car spare parts. According to the prosecution, Awini admitted to the offense in his caution statement. Following an investigation, he was charged and brought before the court.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Awini remains out on bail, with the trial scheduled to resume next month.
