UniMAC-GIJ elects first female SRC President

The University of Media, Arts, and Communication—Ghana Institute of Journalism [UniMAC-GIJ] has chosen its first female president of the Students Representative Council (SRC) in the school's 64-year history.

The University of Media, Arts, and Communication—Ghana Institute of Journalism [UniMAC-GIJ] has chosen its first female president of the Students Representative Council (SRC) in the school’s 64-year history.

Fatimatu Ali was declared the winner after a tight competition with her competitor.

She obtained 51.2% of the 1212 total votes cast to beat her main contender, Yakubu Fedaws Mohammed, who secured 48.8% of the total votes cast.

Her journey to the position of SRC President was marked by persistence and grit, demonstrating her unrelenting dedication to bringing about constructive change on campus.

Fatimatu Ali’s win shattered the usual pattern of male-dominated leadership that had ruled for years. In her rise to this prestigious position, Fatimatu Ali has established herself as a pathfinder for future generations.

Except for the Organizing Secretary, female candidates won against their male counterparts for the first time in the university’s history.

The General Secretary position was won by Benedicta Makafui Djaba, who obtained 56.7%, beating her contender Jeremiah Sekyi Hayford, who also secured 43.3% of the total valid votes cast.

Mercy Adwoa Adomaa Sarpong clinched the Financial Secretary position with 60.5% of the total votes cast, beating her close contender and friend Evans Adjokatse, who obtained 39.5%.

The Women’s Commissioner position was won by Emerald Olive Lotus Impact King with 51.5% of the total valid votes cast, while her contender, Elizabeth Naa Adoley Kpakpo, obtained 48.5% of the total votes cast.

Constance Kusi obtained 42.2% of the total valid votes cast, losing to Stephen Akpo, who obtained 57.8% of the total valid votes cast to win the Organizing Secretary position as the only male in the SRC Executive.

Abena Kwofie Mary, who had no contender, obtained 1079 votes, which amounted to 85.8% of the total votes, to be elected as the External Affairs of the SRC.

The UniMAC-GIJ’s SRC general election was held on August 11, 2023.
