The Police investigation regarding the recent Apiate tragedy revealed that personnel from the Firearms Unit of the police at Tarkwa was escorting explosives from MAXAM Company, Tarkwa, in a DAF van with registration no. WR 2252-18 to Chirano Gold Mines in the Western North Region.
The report says, at Apiatse, a section of the road between Bogoso and Bawdie, a motorcycle rider from the opposite direction ran under the van carrying the explosives.
According to the Police, the motorcycle caught fire, ignited the van which burst into flames and exploded.
The driver of the van sustained deep cut on the head and was rushed to Tarkwa Government hospital. The Police escort escaped unhurt.
Report revealed that a number of people including the motorbike rider are feared dead.
Police say extensive damage was caused to a nearby ECG transformer, a number of nearby buildings were also razed down and the portion of the road where the accident happened is damaged.
Report further stated that some vehicles plying that road were also damaged.
Passengers on the vehicle passing by at the time of the explosion and inhabitants sustained varying degrees of injuries.
