Upper West Akim District supports 60 PWDs

The Upper West Akim District Assembly has presented working tools and livelihood support items to sixty (60) Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to promote economic empowerment and self-reliance among vulnerable groups within the district.

Some beneficiaries present during the distribution of the equipment at the Assembly.

The beneficiaries, who received the items on Monday, June 29, 2026, comprised persons with various forms of disability, including visual impairment, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, physical disability, and autism spectrum disorder. The presentation ceremony took place at the premises of the Assembly in Adieso.

Items distributed included barbering machines, fufu pounding machines, industrial sewing machines, popcorn machines, farm tools, hair dryers, deep freezers, and other livelihood support equipment tailored to the beneficiaries’ individual needs and business interests.

Addressing the gathering, the District Chief Executive for Upper West Akim, Rebecca Chissah, stated that the support was provided in response to requests made by the beneficiaries. She explained that many of the recipients were already engaged in various entrepreneurial activities and required the equipment to expand and improve their businesses.

According to the DCE, the intervention was aimed at encouraging beneficiaries to become more productive and financially independent while inspiring other persons with disabilities who may be engaged in street begging to explore sustainable livelihood opportunities.

She urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items and refrain from selling them, emphasizing that the equipment was intended to improve their economic well-being. She further disclosed that a monitoring team would be established to assess the utilization and impact of the support provided.

“The intervention for persons with disabilities is in line with the Assembly’s vision of empowering vulnerable groups and promoting inclusive development,” she noted.

The Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Drah, commended the initiative and described it as a significant step toward improving the socio-economic conditions of persons with disabilities. He appealed to corporate organizations, development partners, and philanthropists to collaborate with government in extending similar support to more persons with disabilities across the district.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Daniel Lomo, who received a deep freezer to support his provisions business, expressed gratitude to the Assembly for the assistance. He noted that the support would enhance beneficiaries’ livelihoods, improve their businesses, and contribute to raising their standard of living.
