Lecturers at the University of Professional studies, Accra (UPSA) were nowhere to be found in the lecture halls on Monday, February 21, 2022 as first-years resume school.
Checks by the Republic Press indicate that no lecturer was seen in any of the lecture halls.
Interacting with some of the first-years, they revealed that some people from administration briefed them on what to expect for the semester.
Some of them however, could not tell what they were doing on campus as they said “we were told to report today”.
Most of these first-years were sitting in groups chit-chatting while others were hanging around with friends.
On Wednesday, February 16, 2022, an urgent notice signed by the Registrar of UPSA, Dr. Koryoe Anim-Wright asked that lecturers return to the lecture halls on Monday, February 21, 2022 for academic activities to resume.
The notice comes in the wake of injunction being placed on UTAG’s strike by the Labour Division of the Accra High Court. With the injunction, UTAG is required to suspend the strike action and return to the negotiation table.
The order from the court follows an appeal by the National Labour Commission (NLC) for an interlocutory injunction to suspend the strike by UTAG while negotiations continue.
UTAG is therefore expected to halt the strike until the court determines the substantive application by the NLC.
The court presided over by Justice Frank Aboadwe Rockson noted that ongoing negotiations between the parties may not yield any result if the industrial action continues hence the injunction.
All attempts to speak to school authorities was unsuccessful.
