The United States Embassy in Ghana has congratulated the nation for successfully conducting peaceful elections on December 7, reaffirming the strength of Ghana’s democracy.

“Congratulations to all Ghanaians on a successful election that reflects the will of the Ghanaian people,” the embassy said in a statement on Sunday, December 8. The United States looks forward to continuing our strong partnership under John Dramani Mahama.”

The statement also commended the candidates for their commitment to peace and democracy, with particular mention of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s gracious concession.

“We commend all of the candidates that stood for election this cycle and their commitment to peaceful elections and the transfer of power, as so eloquently expressed in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession speech,” the statement added.

Bawumia Concedes

On Sunday, December 8, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat in the highly anticipated December 7 elections.

In a heartfelt announcement, Dr. Bawumia congratulated former President John Dramani Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on his victory, committing to a smooth transition of power.

“I have just called H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia revealed. “While this was not our desired outcome, I acknowledge that this is part of the democratic contest, and I urge everyone to accept the result in the interest of national unity.”

Dr. Bawumia further expressed gratitude to his supporters, party leaders, and family, emphasizing the importance of peace in Ghana’s democratic process. “I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of one thing—that Ghana will win. I stand by that today.”

Although the Electoral Commission is yet to release the official results, Dr. Bawumia noted that the NPP’s internal collation confirmed the NDC’s decisive victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

A Beacon of Democracy

The US Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana’s democratic journey, highlighting the power of the people in determining the country’s future.

As Ghana awaits the official declaration from the Electoral Commission, Dr. Bawumia’s concession has been widely praised as a crucial gesture toward preserving the country’s reputation as a leader in democratic governance on the African continent.
