Three major unions representing tertiary education staff—UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG—have jointly issued a strike threat over continued delays in the disbursement of their book and research allowances.
The unions have given the government a firm deadline of Friday, June 13, 2025, to release the funds, warning that they will not tolerate any extension of the payment delay beyond September 2025.
In a united statement, the groups voiced strong dissatisfaction with what they labeled an “unjustifiable delay” in providing the exchange rate necessary to calculate their allowances. This prolonged wait, they argue, has created financial strain and uncertainty among their members, many of whom depend on the allowance to sustain academic and research activities.
They stressed that the book and research allowance is a non-negotiable entitlement outlined in their Conditions of Service, and must not be treated as a discretionary benefit.
