The invasion of UTV studios by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns about the party’s commitment to the rule of law and freedom of the press.

Prominent surgeon and NPP member, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has expressed his dismay and disappointment at the incident, adding that he received received numerous distress calls from friends, acquaintances, and fellow party members who were deeply troubled by the attack.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng pointed out that the NPP, under President Kufuor’s leadership, had always championed the protection of the rule of law, freedom of the press, and respect for human rights, emphasizing that these values were what initially drew him and many others to the party.

However, the professor says: that recent events have left him questioning how the NPP arrived at this disturbing point. He referenced previous incidents where similar groups attacked government officials and a court, without any consequences. Professor Frimpong-Boateng noted that these acts of violence and impunity have eroded public trust in the party’s leadership.

He went on to express concern about the party’s handling of the country’s economic challenges. Credible economists have predicted a turbulent economic future for Ghana, with recovery potentially taking decades. Despite these warnings, Professor Frimpong-Boateng observed that the government seemed resigned and uninterested in addressing the country’s problems.

The professor also voiced his disappointment with the current composition of the NPP. He felt disconnected from some individuals in positions of political authority and party leadership, stating that they did not align with the principles and values he believed the party stood for.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng emphasized that the NPP’s foundation was built on the rule of law, respect for individual rights, and separation of powers. He criticized any political system that trampled on these rights and warned against the dangers of despotic practices.

In addition, he highlighted the stark contrast between the NPP’s financial struggles in the past and the current allegations of bribery and corruption within the party. He questioned how individuals who were once financially strapped could now afford to spend billions of Cedis to influence internal party elections.

Furthermore, Professor Frimpong-Boateng expressed concern about the influence wielded by certain party members who held no official positions. He criticized their tendency to disrespect and make life difficult for Ghanaians, stating that it went against the principles of the NPP.

Finally, Professor Frimpong-Boateng criticized the party’s choice of a presidential candidate, suggesting that they were opting for a problematic option while already having better alternatives available.

His thought-provoking questions – “NPP, HOW DID WE GET HERE?” – underscored the need for introspection within the party and a recommitment to the values that once made the NPP a beacon of hope for Ghanaians.
