The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has made another significant breakthrough in its fight against narcotics trafficking, intercepting a large consignment of cannabis in the Volta Region barely weeks after a string of similar operations.
In the early hours of Thursday, May 29, 2025, NIB operatives conducted a coordinated raid in Zadolakope, a remote riverside settlement in the North Tongu District. The intelligence-led operation led to the seizure of 3,680 compressed slabs of cannabis, tightly packed into 49 sacks, each containing 80 slabs.
Security sources familiar with the operation said the seizure followed days of discreet surveillance in the Juapong-Adidome axis, which was believed to be a key transit corridor for drug traffickers.
Investigators had reportedly gathered intelligence indicating that the narcotics were to be ferried via the Volta River — beginning from Zadolakope and transiting through Ada — before being moved into Accra for distribution.
The cannabis was discovered concealed near the banks of the river, likely awaiting transport under the cover of darkness.
The use of riverine routes, according to experts, is a growing trend among smugglers seeking to evade highway checkpoints and avoid detection.
The successful interception highlights the growing capabilities of the NIB in tackling cross-regional criminal syndicates. Recent months have seen the Bureau increase its presence in the Volta Region, targeting various forms of smuggling and illicit trade, including drugs and unlicensed cocoa exports.
The intercepted consignment has since been transferred to the Narcotics Control Commission’s regional office in Ho for further investigation and processing.
NIB are expected to trace the origin of the shipment and identify the individuals or groups responsible.
