Police personnel on duty at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police barrier in the Volta Region have intercepted a large consignment of ammunition hidden in a passenger bus en route from Accra to Benin.

In a statement signed by DSP Felix Danku of the Public Affairs Unit, Volta Region, the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025. A routine search on a Hyundai passenger bus with registration number GR 8246-Q led to the discovery of 60 cartons of AAA cartridges containing 15,000 pieces and 72 cartons of BB cartridges totaling 18,000 rounds.

The ammunition was concealed in sacks and hidden beneath luggage in the vehicle.

The driver, Abasou Fousseni, 45, and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, 38, were both arrested for questioning. However, during interrogation, both men denied knowledge of the illicit consignment.

Further investigations by the police suggested that the co-driver was responsible for loading the goods into the bus.

“Consequently, the driver of the vehicle was granted police enquiry bail to enable him convey the passengers to their destination whilst the co-driver was detained to assist investigation,” DSP Felix Danku said in the statement.

The co-driver is expected to be arraigned before court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to combatting transnational crimes and ensuring peace and security across the sub-region.
