The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson and her team have embarked on a three-day working visit to the Volta Region.
The purpose of the visit is to interact with Fishers on Fisheries related issues and also to symbolically close the sea to officially commence the 2021 Closed Fishing Season.
The Closed Fishing Season is a measure to ensure the recovery of depleted marine fish stocks.
Artisanal and Inshore fleets will observe a one month Closed Fishing Season from 1st to 31st July 2021, while the Industrial trawlers will observe two-months Closed Fishing Season from 1st July to 31st August 2021.
Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson has challenged fishers at Ketu South and Keta municipalities to embrace the challenges that comes with the job as government continues to support them with subsidized fishing inputs.
According to her, as government put in it’s best, they should also support by abiding by the regulations that’s governs fishing which will go a long way to turn their fortunes around and also increase the GDP of the country.
The sector minister threw the challenge during a stakeholders engagement with fishers and took the opportunity to hand over one hundred and twenty nine subsidized Outboard Motors to the fishers to complement what was given them last year.
