An alleged campaign-related food distribution sparked outrage at a polling station in the Ablekuma West Constituency, Greater Accra, on Saturday, prompting voters to demand the immediate removal of the vehicle.
The pickup truck, reportedly delivering breakfast from incumbent MP Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, was met with anger from some voters who claimed the act was inappropriate during the ongoing election. Amid loud protests and hooting, the truck was driven away and later parked outside the voting grounds.
According to the occupants of the truck, the meals were intended solely for polling agents and Electoral Commission (EC) officials, not voters. The truck, now parked outside the voting center, has drawn mixed reactions.
“We brought breakfast for our polling agents and EC officials. The food came from Ursula Owusu. But members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) demanded we move the vehicle. This isn’t supposed to be an issue—it’s not for voters,” said Doris Boakye, a member of the NPP in Ablekuma West, in an interview with Citi News.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the NPP candidate, is seeking re-election against the NDC’s Kweku Addo in a hotly contested race.
Meanwhile, police officers have arrived at the scene to ensure calm and order as voting continues.
The incident highlights tensions in one of the most closely watched constituencies in Greater Accra during this election season.
Occupants of the vehicle claimed the food, allegedly provided by the legislator, who is contesting against the National Democratic Congress’ candidate, Kweku Addo, was intended for polling and electoral officials.
The vehicle was moved away from the polling station and is now parked outside the voting center.
