The Chief of Embredane, a rural community near Kansaworodo-Mampong in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region led a swoop by the Anti-Galamsey Taskforce to an illegal mining site along the Whin River.
This act has been commended by various stakeholders in the renewed commitment by the Chiefs and Traditional leaders to champion the fight against illegal mining in their various communities.
The operation which took place on Monday, May 24, 2021 got the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, and a team from the Marine Police and National Security to uncover how the banks of the river and vegetation cover had been destroyed by these recalcitrant miners.
The illegal mining operators had absconded when the team got to the site, and left their machinery hidden in bushes nearby.
The control board of the excavator had already been removed by these miners but that didn’t stop the taskforce from touching it.
The Minister stressed that their operation was “a total breach of the buffer zone defined by the government in protecting water bodies, and forestry.
Investigations have started to ensure that persons behind the operation are brought to book.
