Wasa Amenfi East District Magistrate Court has sentenced a 24-year-old “galamsey” operator, Prosper Agyasi, to six months in prison with hard labour for stealing a mobile phone valued at GH¢14,000.
The incident occurred on January 22, 2025, at a restaurant in Wasa Bawdie, located in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region.
According to Police Chief Inspector Abraham Ayitey, Agyasi had visited the restaurant around 8:30 pm to purchase food. While eating, he quickly snatched a mobile phone left on a table and fled.
Unbeknownst to him, the restaurant’s CCTV cameras captured the entire act. Police investigations led to his swift arrest, and the stolen phone was retrieved from his Nigerian girlfriend in Bawdie.
Agyasi pleaded guilty to the charge, leading the court to hand down a six-month sentence with hard labour.
