A tragic accident has claimed the lives of a 42-year-old woman and her three children at Wassa Dunkwa in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, when the family went searching for firewood near an abandoned illegal mining site that had become dangerously waterlogged, a local source said.

According to the source, the three boys, led by their 14-year-old elder sibling, had returned ahead of their mother after collecting firewood. They stopped at the pit and entered the water, at which point their mother, seeing them in danger, attempted a rescue but also got into trouble.

The bodies of the four family members were later recovered by the Asankragwa Divisional Police and taken to the Catholic Hospital morgue.

ASP Beatrice Turkson, Public Relations Officer for the Western Central Police Command, confirmed the tragedy and stated that investigations are ongoing. She added that a detailed official statement would be released in due course.
