Some aggrieved youth of Wassa Akyempim in the Wassa East District of the Western region have expressed their displeasure with Golden Star Wassa Mining Limited for employing residents outside the Wassa Akyempim community.

The over 600 unemployed youth took to the streets of Wassa Akyempim to demonstrate against the mining company.

Kwasi Mensah who is the convener and leader of the unemployed youth indicated that since the mining company was established at Wassa Akyempim, authorities have refused to employ residents from the community.

He added that the majority of the residents are competent enough to fill various vacancies in the company but they are not given the opportunity.

The company, however, employs people outside the Wassa Akyempim community which is unfair, he stressed.

Meanwhile, Kwasi Mensah also revealed that the Akyempim community and Golden Star Wassa mining Ltd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on employment but the company has failed to apply the MOU.

The vice chairman of the Akyempim youth association, Enoch Nyame also lamented that the mining company has destroyed all their farmlands, and some workers also buying lands at cheap prices from the unemployed residents and allegedly impregnating their sisters and girlfriends.

Several attempts to engage the Community Affairs Manager of Golden Star Wassa Mining Ltd have proved futile.
