About four illegal miners are battling for their lives at the Ateiku health centre in the Wassa East district of the Western region following the scuffle that ensued between them and some individuals in the community.

The clash according to sources happened at the galamsey site at Kyinkyeso near Wassa Brofoyedu in the Wassa East district of Western region when the illegal miners were busily working.

According to the site manager of the illegal miners, Agya Badu Yaw, his boys were on their normal duties as usual when armed macho men believed to be working for the Divisional Chief of Mampongso Nana Kwaamena Damoah II laid ambush on them, saying that they were sent by their Chief.

In no hesitation, the armed Chief workers began attacking the illegal miners with sticks and other offensive objects, resulting in serious injuries.

Further reports revealed that the armed youth later confiscated all their working equipment such as washing machines, and pumping machines among other equipment to the chief’s palace at Wassa Brofoyedu.

Speaking to newsmen, the Mampongso Divisional Chief, Nana Kwame Annim I who is the Apagyahene of the Divisional Chief explained that, these illegal miners at Kyinkyeso have destroyed almost all the major river bodies in the area.

“The illegal miners have destroyed all our water bodies hence we have decided to stop them in our own way. We will continue to seize their equipment till they put a stop to it”, he stressed.

Nana Kwame Annim I therefore called on the government to enforce laws to address the menace.
