The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), has accused the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for downgrading the credibility of paper markings in the country.
This comes after the WAEC shot down allegations leveled against it office by the GNACOPS of its intentionality of marking down private schools and a 30% quota set aside that provides admission for public schools before the private schools.
Speaking in an interview on Republic FM’s Anopa Dawuro on Friday April 8, 2022, with Kwame Koranteng, the PRO f for GNACOPS, Mr. Samuel Nyamekye noted that the nobody speaks ill of the duties and services of the WAEC because for the records of over 31 BECE examinations conducted, WAEC has done exemplary well and must be commended.
Mr. Nyamekye, however insisted that for the past 3 to 4 years, WAEC performance has equally subsidized.
He stated that the activities of WAEC has subsided due to its affiliations with the Ghana Education Service and the willingness to help the GES to project its vision of suppressing the Private schools.
“WAEC has done well for over 31 BECE examinations conducted and they must be commended, but for the past 3 to 4 years now, WAEC performance has been very abysmal, and what we see is because of the affiliations it has with the Ghana Education Service which seeks to project the visions and missions of the GES”, he stated.
However, the PRO revealed that, in a policy document that has been drafted by the GES in page 18 of the document, the policy has set aside 30% of Category A schools for public schools.
He argued that students in private schools may secure aggregate 9 or 10 but will not be given the chance to be admitted in any of the category A schools.
The PRO further stated that 2017, 2018 ad 2019 ERMYS report at the Ministry of Education has indicated that, statistically, the performance of private school has declined abysmally although their checks and reviews of the procedure on how they teach their students to move up showed no change for their performance to decline.
The GNACOPS however, threw a challenge at the WAEC that if they think it’s a wild allegations against their office and they don’t have any proof, they are calling for a remarking.
He added that if WAEC should consider the remarking, they shall not accept the decision where nobody will ask any further questions but insisted that, the GNACOPS will only be interested in an internal independent body that will scrutinize all the scripts of private to ascertain whether the private schools are not doing well.
It further stated that the GNACOPS has drew the attention of the Ministry on the cut off point of 30% reservation for public schools which according to the GNACOPS breaches article 25 clause 1 and 2 respectively.
