Government has released an amount of GH¢80 million to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), in preparation for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
This was revealed on the floor of Parliament on Friday June 21, 2024 by the Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh.
In the past weeks, concerns were raised over the uncertainty of students taking the exams as WAEC was awaiting some GH¢95.83 million to organize the examination.
However, on the floor of Parliament on Friday while members were debating the urgency of the National Service Authority Bill, the Minority argued that, there were more pressing issues such as releasing funds for WAEC to organize the exams than the Bill hence the minister responsible for education should address it.
“On the matter of releases to WAEC, the Minority Chief Whip will bare me witness. We spoke to the minister of state at the finance ministry, Hon. Abena Osei Asare who got back to the ministry, did all the checks and indeed they have made significant release. Mr. Speaker we are told an amount of 80 million has been released”, Frank Annoh-Dompreh emphasized.
The 2024 BECE is scheduled to commence on Monday, July 8 and end on Monday, July 15, 2024, at various centres across the country.
