The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of provisional results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
This year’s results are now available online, allowing candidates and schools to access their performance data on the WAEC portal, www.waecgh.org.
WAEC has cautioned stakeholders to remain vigilant against fraudsters who may promise to upgrade results for a fee. The Council emphasized that only results authenticated through its verification system, including a downloadable QR code, should be considered valid.
Performance Statistics
A total of 460,611 candidates, comprising 212,954 males and 247,657 females from 1,003 schools, registered for the 2024 WASSCE.
This represents a 2.66% increase compared to the 2023 figure of 448,674 candidates. Out of the total registered, 4,609 candidates (1%) were absent.
Table 1 provided by WAEC highlights the performance in the four core subjects:
- English Language: 69.52% scored grades A1-C6.
- Mathematics (Core): 66.86% achieved A1-C6.
- Integrated Science: 58.77% recorded A1-C6.
- Social Studies: 71.53% obtained A1-C6.
A comparative analysis of results over the past four years shows fluctuating performance trends in key subjects, with Mathematics recording a steady improvement, while Integrated Science witnessed a decline in 2024.
Irregularities and Sanctions
The Council also reported examination irregularities after investigations by its Examinations Committee. Key sanctions include:
- Cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates due to possession of unauthorized materials, such as prepared notes and textbooks, in examination halls.
- Cancellation of entire results for 483 candidates found using mobile phones during exams.
- Withholding of subject results for 781 candidates and the entire results of 209 candidates for other offenses pending further investigations.
WAEC noted that results from 319 schools are under scrutiny for alleged collusion, with final decisions on these cases to be made based on ongoing investigations.
WAEC expressed gratitude to key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, security agencies, and school authorities, for their role in ensuring the successful conduct of the examination and release of results.
Candidates are encouraged to verify their results only through official channels to avoid falling victim to fraudulent activities.
