The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that all withheld results from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be released on February 28, 2025.
According to Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the decision follows hearings conducted for affected candidates, ensuring that only deserving results are released. He reassured the public that the council is committed to fairness and upholding the integrity of its examinations.
WAEC also raised concerns about the rising trend of examination malpractices and urged parents, guardians, the media, and other stakeholders to collaborate in tackling the issue.
As part of disciplinary measures, the council cancelled the results of 4,108 candidates for bringing unauthorized materials into exam halls, while 483 candidates lost their entire results for possessing mobile phones.
Additionally, WAEC withheld subject results for 781 candidates and entire results for 209 candidates over suspected infractions. Results from 319 schools were also withheld due to alleged collusion.
WAEC follows a rigorous process when dealing with withheld results, including contacting affected schools, reviewing scripts, and giving candidates an opportunity to respond to allegations. The council will finalize its decisions based on these investigations.
Some candidates challenged the withholding of their results in court, resulting in a ruling that ordered WAEC to release them.
However, the examination body has appealed the decision, with the case set for hearing on February 20, 2025.
WAEC has urged affected candidates and their guardians to cooperate with the council to facilitate the timely release of results.
