A midwife at the Yaama CHPS Compound in the Walewale Municipality of the North East Region has been commended for her quick response in saving the lives of a pregnant woman and her newborn during a medical emergency.
Mary Agyeman, the midwife in charge of the facility, acted promptly after the woman developed complications during labour and required urgent transfer to a higher-level health facility.
However, due to the unavailability of an ambulance or other immediate means of transportation, Madam Agyeman arranged for the patient to be transported on a motor king tricycle while continuing to provide critical obstetric care along the way.
Before reaching the referral facility, she successfully delivered the baby on the tricycle, ensuring that both the mother and child survived the emergency.
The mother and newborn are currently reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.
Madam Agyeman’s dedication, professionalism and bravery have received widespread praise, with many highlighting her commitment to providing quality healthcare despite challenges faced by health workers in underserved communities.
The incident has renewed calls for improved emergency transport systems to support healthcare delivery, particularly in rural areas where access to ambulances remains a challenge.
