Just days after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) reviewed and approved an 18.36% increment in electricity tariffs, it has been announced that the cost of water will also go up for all consumer groups effective June 1, 2023.
This follows a review and approval by the (PURC) for water tariffs to go up for the second quarter of 2023.
In a statement issued on May 18, 2023, the commission said In taking this decision, the commission took cognizance of the cost of electricity, increased volume cost of chemicals for raw water treatment, the Ghana Cedi/US Dollar exchange rate and inflation.
“The Commission will continue to monitor the operations of the utility service providers to ensure value for money and quality service delivery,” the statement added.
The upward adjustment of electricity and water tariffs is evident that the government is working towards revenue mobilization as proposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in approving Ghana’s $3 billion loan deal.
The deal which has been finalized and some $600 million expected to hit government’s account on Friday, May 19, 2023 will help stabilize the country’s struggling economy.
However, some economists are of the view that, the bailout is will affect the vulnerable since government will put in several measures in order not to break the IMF’s conditions.
