The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate in the Ayawaso East By-lection, Baba Ali Yusif has conceded defeat.
Speaking in an interview with 3news at the Collation Centre on March 3, he said the constituents have decided and that is final.
“We accept it in good faith,” he told Eric Mawuena Egbeta.
Although the results are yet to be officially announced, collation undertaken by Media General’s Election Command Centre reveals that the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Baba Jamal has won with 63% while he has 23%.
He noted that they took the election more serious than all the candidates, yet were unsuccessful.
“We campaigned more than any other candidate. We went house to house. Just that we couldn’t meet our expectation. For them to win this election is no news,” he stressed.
Baba Yusif further stated that the low voter turnout indicates that the constituents have no confidence in the ruling NDC government.
“People have lost confidence in the NDC. If all we can pull is 20,000 votes for all candidates, it means the people have lost confidence,” he noted.
Baba Yusif explained that, “There is no development project in the constituency like happens in other places during by-election.”
He nonetheless congratulated Baba Jamal for his win.
“I use this medium to congratulate him, we move on,” he stated.
The NPP candidate pledged to continue to advocate for development within the constituency.
“I will continue to be a voice in the community. We will point out what is not going right,” Baba Yusif assured.
