‘We can’t find our MP’ – Ahafo cocoa farmers slam Agric minister

Cocoa farmers in Ahafo Kukuom, Asunafo South, have protested against their Member of Parliament, Hon. Eric Opoku, accusing him of failing to fulfill promises made during the 2024 campaign.

The farmers claim Opoku pledged a price of GH₵6,000 per bag of cocoa if they voted for the NDC, but the government later set the price at GH₵2,500, sparking outrage among the constituency’s cocoa growers.

Farmers say Opoku has been notably absent from the area since the price reduction and are demanding an apology for what they describe as misleading campaign commitments.

This protest is part of a wider trend in Ghana’s cocoa-growing regions, where farmers have expressed frustration over unfulfilled promises and feel betrayed by political leaders.

While the NDC campaigned on a promise to increase cocoa prices, the government has cited global market fluctuations and fiscal constraints as reasons for the lower price. Farmers, however, insist that the reduction undermines trust and are calling for accountability from their representative.

Ahafo Kukuom cocoa farmers say they will continue to demand answers until their grievances are addressed.
