The Deputy Secretary of New Ghana Transport Union at Kumasi Alarbaa in the Ashanti region, Mr. Mohammed Habib has appealed to the Inspector General of Police to provide police escort for passengers on the Kumasi and Tema roads.

He said that, armed robbers have been attacking road users on the road day in and out, believing that when they are being escorted by police, it will help curb the situation.

“We are appealing to the IGP to give passengers using the Kumasi, Tamale roads police escort since armed robbers have been terrorizing us , previously the police used to give is the escort but now they have stopped so we are appealing to the IGP to bring them back to curb the situation”, he added .

However, he urged drivers to avoid abusing alcohol when driving since it can lead to accident.

“I want to take this opportunity to urge drivers to abstain from alcohol when driving, I believe this can also help reduce accidents on our roads”, he reiterated.

Highway robberies are common on rural roads, especially near border areas. Bandits typically place obstructions in the road or simulate a crash/broken-down vehicle to stop traffic to steal vehicles or belongings.

In Accra and other urban areas, thieves and armed robbers target motorists using ruses to extort money. In some cases, robbers have intentionally caused minor accidents or pretended to be hit to get vehicles to stop.

Others have attempted to “warn” drivers of a mechanical problem or flat tire.
