Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah has acknowledged that the team’s management board was not pleased with the decision to fire Burkinabe coach Seydou Zerbo.
According to him, the management of the club had received information that some fans who were not happy with the coach had planned to attack him at the training grounds, which would have ruined the reputation of the club, and hence, relieved him of his duties.
“We did not bow to just calls for him to go. I think as a management, we knew where the club was, and we knew what he was capable of, but we picked up strong intel that some people had plotted to go and attack him at the training grounds, similar to what happened to Matic and Hearts of Oak and that has happened at Kotoko before, and we felt that such a thing happening will be in the interest of the club, especially with the image of the club.
“When we engaged him, he also said he had had some conversations with his embassy here, and they had reiterated the same, so we felt that to sit down for some people to attack him to defame Kotoko’s brand, then it would be better to let him go if he is fallen out of love.”
If you ask any management member, we were not happy with him going because we felt we had a chance in the league with him,” he told Oyerepa Sports.
Kotoko appointed Seydou Zerbo to replace Prosper Narteh Ogum who resigned as the head coach in July 2022.
Prior to his sack, he led Kotoko to win nine league matches, drawing seven, and losing six.
