Founder and leader of Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has revealed plans to amend article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution to extend the term of office of the President to five (5) years.
At an official unveiling of the Great Transformational Plan (GTP) in Accra on Monday, June 24, 2024, Mr. Kyerematen mentioned that the GTP will focus on key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, governance, and infrastructure which will see a transformed Ghana under his reign as president.
Addressing plans set out for governance, Alan Kyerematen noted that the GTP will see stringent measures to combat corruption and enhance transparency in public procurement including amending the 1992 constitution.
He explained that amending the constitution is key to achieving transparency in governance and allowing state institutions such as the office of the special prosecutor to function independently.
“To enhance the quality of governance we propose the following solutions including demonstrating a leadership where leaders can deal in fairness with people around them. We will also isolate all corruption-related provisions in existing legislation hence we are proposing that we will amend the constitution not just to consolidate all these legislation to fight corruption but appoint an anti-corruption desire who will have an independent authority”, he said.
He added that “We will amend Article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution to extend the term of office of the President of the republic from four to five (5) years noting that no candidate under this provision will have the right to be as president for more than two terms”
Touching on Infrastructural development, the former trade minister advocated for increased private sector involvement in infrastructure development, supported by fiscal incentives and the issuance of infrastructure bonds with key priorities including modernizing energy infrastructure, expanding affordable housing initiatives, and integrating digital technologies to optimize urban planning and service delivery.
