Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has dismissed claims that the party’s forthcoming presidential primaries are designed to favour former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or any other candidate.

The NPP presidential primaries are set for January 31, 2026, a date ratified by the party’s National Council following recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee. Despite circulating concerns, Kodua said in a June 18 interview that any suggestion of bias is baseless.

“I would be very surprised if anyone believes an election that hasn’t yet taken place would be rigged in favour of one candidate,” he remarked.

Kodua defended the party’s internal electoral procedures as consistently democratic and fair over the years. He pointed out that from elections held since 1992, a large percentage—often 70 to 80 percent—of incumbent executives have retained their positions at various levels.

He added that the order in which internal elections occur, whether starting from polling stations or at the national level, does not advantage any aspirant.

“The structure of our election process ensures no candidate gets preferential treatment. Current executives will maintain their roles regardless of how the election sequence unfolds.”
