GRA investigates Bills Micro-Credit founder over personal income tax

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that it has frozen the bank accounts of Richard Nii Armah Quaye, founder of Bills Micro Credit Ltd, and imposed a GH₵30 million personal income tax assessment on him.

In a statement issued by its Communication & Public Affairs Department, GRA clarified that while a tax assessment has been raised against Mr. Quaye, no enforcement action, including the freezing of his bank accounts, has been taken.

The Authority outlined its standard procedures for assessing taxpayers, which include issuing formal requests for voluntary income declaration, conducting assessments for non-compliance, and following due processes to collect outstanding tax payments.

It emphasized that enforcement actions, such as garnishment of accounts, are only taken when taxpayers fail to cooperate after assessments have been raised.

GRA urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and reiterated its call for all eligible taxpayers to voluntarily declare their incomes and fulfill their tax obligations to avoid penalties and other legal consequences.

The statement also reassured taxpayers of GRA’s commitment to fairness, integrity, responsiveness, and teamwork in carrying out its mandate.
