The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has debunked claims being circulated by the media that, it has withdrawn the decision to increase transport fares not less than 60%.
In an interview with Citi News, the Public Relations Officer for the union, Abbas Imoro, tagged the reportage as false.
“We have not withdrawn the statement we made in connection with the not less than 60% upward adjustment in lorry fares. We never on any platform stated that we have withdrawn the transport fares that we tend to slash on our lorry fares. It is not true; it might be any politically motivated talks, so we will condemn that. We will continue to say that we have written to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, of which they went to recess, and they are yet to return”, he said.
He highlighted that, the union is taking things slow because parliament has not resumed sitting to deliberate on their petition, but if nothing is being said, they will continue with their decision.
“When they resume, we will give them some time to hear from them. If we don’t hear from them, the leadership will put in a reminder or go ahead with whatever decision we have taken. This is what we said; we have not said anywhere that we are withdrawing the statement we made”, he added.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) disclosed that, due to the Emission Levy Bill passed in parliament and commenced in January 2024, citizens should expect not less than 60% increment in transport fare on January 10, 2024.
The Public Relations Officer for the union, Abbas Imoro, during an interview with Accra based Citi TV, lamented that, the new bill has added extra burdens on the union in this hard economy despite the already existing bills they are paying.
“We are already paying for the emission, 10 pesewas for a litre. So you can imagine 10 pesewas by 4.5 for a gallon by several gallons you use a day times 26 working days in a month. You can imagine how much one driver pays for it. And we pleaded with parliament that they should have a second look at it”, he added.
