The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, has revealed that, due to the erratic power outage, the commission has secured generators to ensure a continuous limited voter registration exercise on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
She made this known during a press briefing on Monday, May 6, 2024 in Accra.
“We are trying hard to, we’ve made arrangements to ensure that we don’t have challenges because of dumsor. What we’ve done is to have all our district offices rent generators so that in the event where there’s dumsor, that can kick in”, Jean Mensa said.
The EC further explained that, in the presence of any unforeseen contingency, its offices will switch to an “offline” mode, where voters will be registered manually, and their details will be stored on a pen drive.
“However, should there be the unexpected, we would switch on to the offline and by offline it means the voters will be registered and their details will be put on a pen drive and that will be copied in our offices when the light returns, so the registration will not be disrupted”, she added.
However, the Ghana Education Service has granted permission to Senior High School and Senior High Technical schools (SHS/SHTS) students above age 18 to partake in the limited voter registration exercise starting from Tuesday, May 7 to Monday, May 27, 2024.
Meanwhile, GES in an official statement dated May 6, 2024, highlighted that students have been given the opportunity to take four days off to partake in the nationwide exercise.
“The students have been granted four days off from campus effective Tuesday, May 7, 2024, to Friday, May 10, 2024, to partake in the exercise in line with the constitutional right of all Ghanaian citizens to exercise their franchise”, the statement read.
